- Hello all,
-
- I have recently tried to upgrade my A3000 with and A3640 board and
- have run into the following problem. Any help with this will be
- greatly appreciated.
-
- First my setup before the surgery:
-
- A3000 16M/2M (All Static Column)
- Softkicked 2.04
- Seagate 2.2GB
- Retina ZIII
- A4066 Ethernet
- Ramsey -04
- DMAC -02
- SBuster -07
- WD SCSI -04
-
- I got my hands on an A3640 board and set out to install it. After
- consulting several sources of information for this swap. I managed to
- get my hands on new Ramsey and DMAC chips as well as new Super Buster
- and WD SCSI chips (not necessary, I know). As this was a softkicked
- machine I understood that I must at least upgrade to 2.04 ROMs. I
- tried unsuccesfully to find an OS3.1 upgrade kit but the best I could
- do was put one on order. I did manage to find a pair of 2.04 ROMs
- though.
-
- I cracked open the case with the intention of replacing the custom
- chips and installing the new ROMs before installing the A3640. As I
- find it quite a pain in the ass to get to the mother board under the
- drive bridge, I decided to replace all the chips at once. All the old
- chips came out without a hitch and the new chips went in equally well.
- I put everything back together without installing the A3640.
-
- After surgery:
-
- A3000 16M/2M (All Static Column)
- Softkicked 2.04
- Seagate 2.2GB
- Retina ZIII
- A4066 Ethernet
- Ramsey -07
- DMAC -04
- SBuster -11
- WD SCSI -08

- I crossed my fingers and powered up. The machine whirred back to life
- and everything seemed fine. Shortly after booting, during normal use,
- I recieved a single "checksum error" message on my WB_2.x partition.
- All else seemed fine save this one error. This machine spends most of
- its life running NetBSD so I loaded it to see if everything worked.
- Again, no problems. I ran this machine for several more days both in
- and out of NetBSD and it ran flawlessly.
-
- Now I finally decided that it was time to install the A3640. Once
- again I cracked the case. I changed the appropriate jumpers,
- installed the board and put everything back together. This time when
- I booted, however, things we not fine. I had not one, but dozens of
- checksum errors on everypartition (ever ones not mounted by Amiga OS).
- Finally after much trying, the system became unusable. I couldn't do
- anything without bazillions of these errors. I booted from floppy and
- everything ran fine. Sysinfo even told me I had a 68040 processor.
-
- In the mean time, my OS3.1 upgrade kit came in so I went and picked it
- up. Hoping against hope that this would alleviate my problems, I
- installed the new ROMs. Now it boots from the floppy just fine but I
- have no hard drive at all. I atempted to install the new OS but it's
- no use. I can use HDToolbox to assign a drive type and partition the
- drive but no matter what I try, whenever I reboot for the changes to
- take affect they are lost. The drive info, partitioning information,
- everything.
-
- Now I would hate to have to back out the new chips to make this thing
- work. I'm hoping some kind soul out there has some insight into this
- problem. So, how about it? Anyone know what's going on here?
-
-
- Many many many thanks in advance,
-
- Garth.
